Choosing the right candidate.

February 1st is Election Day, with Advanced Polls open on January 21st, 22nd and 28th at City Hall (10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.). it is important (still, again and as always) to stop and consider the candidates on the ballot. Undoubtedly, you are searching for someone with the experience and knowledge to fill the role, two qualifications I clearly have in my arsenal. However, the role of a councilor is more than that and the article below outlines some other necessary conditions for "great" councilors. After you read this, I believe you will find me to be the best candidate for the job!

Greensence Survey Responses

Greensence is a group of committed citizens dedicated to promoting renewable energy alternatives in Southern Alberta. The group actively informs citizens and elected leaders of the potential uses of Green Renewable Energy sources for residents, governments and businesses.

Greensence conducted a shortened but focused survey of the by-election candidates so that voters can elect a candidate who will commit to fostering a healthy environment long into the future.  Read more »

A "Concerned Citizens Group" and Open Democracy

Bill of Rights for Lethbridge

On September 23rd, all the aldermanic and mayoralty candidates for Council received an e-mail from an organization called "Concerned Citizens Group". The Group had designed a Bill of Rights for Lethbridge Citizens and they wanted each candidate to sign on to it. Apparently, this Group will place an ad in the Lethbridge Herald stating who has signed and who has not. I did not.

Campaign Lawn Signs

Not to belabour the point that I'm only placing my campaign lawn signs on private property, but has anyone actually read the City's rules regarding campaign signs? If you haven't, don't worry: you're obviously not alone. Based on some of the signs out there, many candidates haven't read it either.

For your reading pleasure, here are the current campaign sign rules from the City of Lethbridge:

Guidelines for the Placement of Free Standing Election Signs on City of Lethbridge Road Right of Way

 1 Election Sign Definition:

A Ward System for Lethbridge

Ward System

Consider the following 2 points:1) We elect city councilors to represent us at City Hall, where they are to make decisions that benefit the community. In Lethbridge, we select these representatives through an “at-large” (or “city wide”) ballot, where every eligible voter can vote for all eight aldermanic positions (although citizens do not have to vote for all eight positions). In theory, our at-large system means that each councilor is accountable to all 85,000 citizens in our city. In theory, this also means that we have 8 councilors representing our needs.

Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program

We all recognize that, as a society, we are living longer thanks to a variety of factors. However, when you consider someone living on a fixed income – as many local seniors do – a longer lifespan can actually be problematic. I have heard from too many healthy and independent seniors that say they must look at leaving their home to ensure they have future income. For some, this may be an easy decision. For others, it appears heartbreaking: “but what alternative do we have?”

Bicycle By-law

Bicycle helmet law

The City's proposal to make bicycle helmets mandatory for all citizens is certainly a contentious issue. There are very strong arguments outlining both the pros and the cons of mandatory helmet laws (see below). I believe we all see the wisdom in making it mandatory for our children and youth to 'buckle up under the chin'. As a co-founder of Safety City Society, I have always supported and advocated for such rules for our youngest citizens.

Skate park

After reviewing the material provided by the Lethbridge Skateboard Association and looking at skate parks in other cities, it's obvious Lethbridge needs a better park in a better place.  I think this kind of facility is exactly the kind of project that fits my long-term view for the city: a physically active city; diversity in the activities available, and; a Council that considers everyone as citizens.  As a member of City Council, I would help the Lethbridge Skateboard Association gain support from business and community groups and I would urge other alderman to includ
